MyScriptFont

I’ve long wanted a font based on my own hand. The easiest, cheapest and quickest way is MyScriptFont. To get my personal script, I wrote out an alphabet on their printed-out template (block letters only, no cursive), scanned the sheet and uploaded it, and then installed the scaleable font they handed back. It’s free. Takes only minutes.

Once I had my handprinting font, I figured I could quickly make other homemade fonts. It’s a quick cheap way to make any kind of unique hand-drawn font you want.

Meet Broala, LLC

1 Comment

Today we're delighted to introduce a new venture that we've been preparing in the background for a little while already: the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) is spinning off a company, Broala, that provides professional Bro services to organizations looking for an alternative beyond what the resources of the non-profit grant-funded Bro team can provide. Founded by core members of the Bro project, Broala offers strategic consulting on Bro installation, deployment, and customization, as well as individualized training and contract development. For more information, please read the full press release, then head over to broala.com.

We would like to emphasize that the whole Bro team remains fully committed to our core principles that have served us so well for many years. Bro will always remain open-source under the BSD license, and ICSI will keep providing the project with a home; we'll maintain and extend the system just as we have been doing in the past, and we'll stay true to our research roots.  Broala is adding something new on top of what we have, it's not taking anything away from the amazing community that has developed around Bro over the years. Indeed, we aim for Broala's success to help ensure Bro's long-term viability as an open-source project.  With that, please welcome Broala as a new member of the Bro community. We're looking forward to exciting times ahead!

Is your Mac's File System Protected?

1 Share
Nothing original here, but this is a great tip, so I want to share it.  Thanks to @thegrugq for cluing me into this via Twitter.

For everyone running OS X 10.7 or 10.8 on their Macs (and really, EVERYONE should be on 10.8; the security benefits are non-trivial) and are using FileVault 2 to encrypt your filesystems (you are, right?) here's a good tip I picked up the other day:

$ sudo pmset -a destroyfvkeyonstandby 1
$ sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25

This has the effect of destroying the memory-resident FileVault encryption key, writing the contents of memory to disk, and removing power from RAM (i.e., hibernating).  Doing this will help protect your laptop from getting raped via FireWire DMA by your hotel's cleaning staff or by the Border Patrol.

A nice article on the topic:

Is It Worth the Time?

13 Comments and 56 Shares
Don't forget the time you spend finding the chart to look up what you save. And the time spent reading this reminder about the time spent. And the time trying to figure out if either of those actually make sense. Remember, every second counts toward your life total, including these right now.

If you have to take time to correct errors, that's really part of the time to do the task. So making something less error prone is really shaving time off the task, even if an optimist doesn't see it that way.
